Modern Hip Baby Nursery

When designing this modern hip baby nursery for our 3rd child, we were faced with the challenge of planning a unisex room since we were keeping the sex of the baby a surprise.

After being quite disappointed in the small selection of unisex bedding for nurseries, I decided to simply create a theme based on the colors that I enjoyed and already had in the rest of my house.

Since our nursery is downstairs and off the main areas of the house, I wanted it to flow with the rest of my decor, so I chose the colors of turquoise, orange, chocolate-brown and red. We also had a four poster red crib that we had used for our other 2 children so, of course, we had to include that in the design plans as well.

As an artist, I love bright colors and contrast. I especially love the way white accents pop off of bold primary colors.

After finally deciding on the fabrics, my mother and I made all of the bedding and other accents around the room.

All of the furniture in the nursery is from my previous nurseries but we gave some of it a face lift. I had the rocking arm chair reupholstered in chocolate brown suede and repainted the antique side table in white for a "baroque" look.

I painted the room a soft but bright shade of pale blue, then the window seat box chocolate brown. I knew that after the baby was born, I would be ordering a name decal in either red or pink.

I choose a white shag sheep skin rug for the floor in a circle shape to mimic the circle I painted on the wall over the crib. I found the little yellow chair at a flea market and the rest of the items were from boutiques around town.
