Dr. Seuss' Lorax Nursery

We decided to design our nursery around our favorite Dr. Seuss story, The Lorax. We managed to time the project (and the baby) well, as the story was just re-adapted and brought to theaters this year.

What brand and color of paint did you use?

Valspar - We used 15 colors in total.

If you added stripes, polka dots or other paint effects, tell us how you did it.

The first step was planning which of our favorite characters would transition well from the pages of the book to the walls. We combed through the book and sketched out a design, keeping in mind our furniture placement.

Next, we projected the selected characters and trees onto the walls and sketched in the shapes with pencil. This was more difficult than expected as the images were severely distorted in the process, but we managed to get the basic shapes, sizing and concepts down.

Then came the painting – and painting, and painting! We painted each color using paint samples from Lowe’s. (Using cheaper 8oz. samples saved us a ton of money and waste over quarts or gallons, but the paint quality in some colors meant four to five coats. We would recommend going with a higher quality in red, particularly. That color does not cover well! And, of course, you may need more than a sample in any large areas - grass, sky, and water.)

After (weeks of) painting, we outlined and added the black details around the shapes and characters using a combination of

Sharpie oil-based paint markers, paint, and regular Sharpies.

What brand of crib did you buy? Where from?

Delta Sedona, Babies "R" Us

What brand of furniture did you choose? Where did you buy it?

Ikea Expedit shelf, Ikea Hemnes dresser.

What bedding set did you use? Where did you buy it?

Custom-designed, handmade quilts and sheets from Grandma.

Tell us about your window treatments, lighting, rugs, wall decor and accessories. Where did you buy them - were any handmade?

We added a Bliss Shag Rug in Expresso.

Our final touch was a wall decal of our favorite quote from the story – “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” We purchased the decal from Amazon.com.

How did you store all your baby goodies? In baskets, on shelves?

Ikea Antonius closet storage containers.

How long did it take you? Was it easy, fun, difficult? What was your favorite part?

Two months to finish the wall murals, 80-100 hours total.

Did you do the entire nursery on your own or did someone help you? Who? What did they do?

Grandma created all of the linens. We completed all of the painting ourselves.

What do you love most about your little one's finished room?

The walls and all of the handmade quilts, blankets, and bedding from Grandma. And, of course, the message of the Lorax's story…
