There's more to the bumbo seat than first meets the eye.

They only cost around $40 and they are worth every cent, but many moms are worried about baby safety issues associated with them. Because of this they miss out on one of the best baby items I ever bought.

As for infant safety, I had my bumbo baby seat for eight years through four babies and believe me it is perfectly safe if you follow these basic precautions:

Only use the bumbo seat on a flat, ground-level surface.
NEVER use the bumbo chair on a raised surface.
Always keep your baby in view. The bumbo is purposefully designed not to be totally restrictive, so it is possible for babies to get out of it. If the chair is on the floor, where it should be, this will not present any problems other than that you now have a possibly mobile bundle of mischief on the loose. You'll want to know when it happens.
Only use after your baby can support his head without assistance.
DO NOT use the bumbo baby seat as a car seat or bath seat. It is not designed for either of these purposes.

You may have heard about the bumbo chair recall of 25 October 2007.

I certainly did and was shocked to say the least. After all I had already used mine with three little ones and was still using it with my fourth.

However, I was relieved to learn that the chair was only recalled so that an adjustment could be made to the warning label on the chair, not due to a defect in the product itself. Parents had been using the bumbo seat on raised surfaces and several babies had climbed out and fallen to the floor.

The new warning label urges parents never to use the bumbo baby sitter on an elevated surface.
