Baby Nursery with a Floor of Flowers
by Marc Perella
When I was thinking of what to make for my daughter's room, I wanted something very natural, and something very real that brought fresh air, and gave a very pleasant look to the room. What I ended up making was a thick Plexiglas floor that had a space underneath it, and then I put flowering plants under the Plexiglas. The floor with flowers has a simple watering system, which was made much simpler because our home is only one floor high, and ranch style. The floor has many very small holes in it to allow for the fresh air to flow into our daughter’s room and there is a small pressure system that will suck the air up into her room if needed in some cases. The sides of the floor are made of rubber coated concrete and there are sections of flowers that are divided evenly throughout the floor, to ensure that each little box section of soil is given the right amount of water per day. The roof of my daughter’s room is made of glass so that the plants can get enough light. In the beginning the sunlight was a problem because of our daughter’s bed and her dresser, but it was quickly fixed, by making and putting in special lights that were targeted to the areas that aren’t getting enough sunlight by day. These lights are on a timer with the watering system to make sure the correct amount of light is given to the flowers. The one thing that is a hassle however, is removing and replanting a new flower if one dies. For this we have to temporarily remove the floor, so all the furniture in her room must be removed first.
